Chapter 15: Glowing Wings

I drifted through day and night, never pausing to take a rest. With my mind still at a chaotic state, I didn't want to stop and take a breath. I longed for the days when I was just an ordinary kid, where I could take a stroll through the malls and play with my friends. I ached for the days, which I would go camping with Jake. I dreamed of the times that I would go to a public swimming pool and take a dive.

Hell, I wanted my old life back. I didn't want this... this new destiny or whatever.

Skyscrapers and smaller buildings were below me as I soared above them. People and vehicles were like small insects. They swarmed around the streets as they went on their daily activities. The morning was cool, but the air stank from the exhaust pipes as if a skunk had just assaulted the sky.

I glanced down, and saw people wandering through the doors of the shopping centers. I saw children holding onto their parents' hands as they jumped gleefully beside the adults. Men and women were holding onto their briefcases, purses, and bags, as they crossed the busy roads.

I heard laughter, happiness... Something that I had lost a long time ago.

When I lifted my head, I saw the wall of a tower coming straight at my face. Instinctively, I pulled a hard right to avoid collision. My heart raced as it pounded against my chest. That was too close for comfort.

An airliner roared over me as I examined the view before my eyes. All these humans were having a blast of their lifetime, whereas me, I had nothing. I was basically an extraterrestrial life form on this planet.

Flapping my wings a few times, I began to climb higher into the clouds. I wanted to feel the chilly vapors that would cling to my bare upper body. I craved the feeling of freedom. The clouds themselves were a unite symbol of independence. I didn't need anyone. I could survive on my own.

I sucked in a deep breath as I folded my wings and free-dropped down to earth. I loved the sensation. Travelling at the rate of over eighty miles per hour, all I could hear was thunderous air rushing pass my ears. The surroundings were blurry as I continued to shoot downward at an alarming rate. I felt like a rocket with a turbo-boost on full power.

Something near the corner of my eyes had caught my attention. Two people wearing masks were holding guns near a bank. The police hadn't arrived yet, but the civilians were yelling with fright. I gritted my teeth as I dropped toward them, sinking lower and lower to the ground.

Before those two robbers could react, I slammed into one of them head on. Using my inertia, I grabbed him by the sides and catapulted him through a panel of glass. He screamed as he crashed into the financial institution, skidded across the slick marble floor and slammed into the side of a counter. His gun clattered across the floor and stopped by the feet of a trembling clerk. I went up ninety-degrees along the bare white wall and landed on the sidewalk minutes later.

I didn't do it because I felt the need for justice. I did it because I wanted to unleash my anger, my frustration. I wanted to get rid of the chain that was binding my mind up.

Men and women shouted with surprise as they pointed at me. I turned and glared at them. Most became quiet; others were running away, shrieking like mad.

The other culprit shook with apprehension as he tried to aim at me with his gun. With one swift movement, I sliced his wrist with my claws. He cried out in pain as the weapon dropped onto the ground.

"Who... What are you?" He asked with quivering lips, as his eyes were wide at the sight of me.

He was fat. I hated men who were fat. Ripping his mask off, I snarled. The guy had a pair of bluish eyes. He had long, golden hair with an ugly looking face.

"I'm nobody, you hear me? Nobody. I am nothing. I have nothing. I don't want nothing. I, am very puzzled... and... confused, right now," I forced out the last few words as I held his chin with my claws. "I feel like... No, I want to destroy something. You and everyone else is a menace to my life."

He struggled but I tightened my hold. Blood began to drip from the cuts on his face. I tilted my head.

"You like robbing people, don't you?"

"I..." The dude was stammering as he looked for help. None came. Everyone was standing far away from us.

I flapped my wings a little. "You think robbing people is fun, don't you?" I asked again. This time, I grabbed him by the throat.

From far away, I could hear police sirens coming closer. Apparently, someone had dialed nine-one-one.

He drove out a weak chuckle. "Listen, you freak. Soon, the cops will come and they will lock you up along with me! You are a monster. You don't belong here. They will dissect you once they have captured you, while I will get life in prison. You monster!" He spat at me.

With rage firing up my strength, I slowly lifted the man from the ground. His fingers were clawing at my arms as he tried to get away.

"Listen... You and I can work together!" He started to offer me something when he saw the inevitable fate awaiting him. "Look, let me go and I'll help you with those devil's wings or something. You and I, we can be rich! I got a plan on how you make you a star, if you would just... let... me... go...!"

I bared my teeth as I shouted: "I don't like your proposal!"

With a wild throw, his body slammed through the other glass panel. Pieces of shiny crystals dancing around us as the spectators gasped with shock. Now police cars stopped with several screeches.

Men in uniform climbed out and drew out their weapons. One of them saw me and shouted: "Tobieaz! Stop where you are!"

I looked at them sideways.

"Put your arms in the air! Don't move!"

A giant opening was made through the crowds as I stood there, alone, in front of the bank.

"Or what?" I challenged angrily. "Shoot me? Go ahead! Take your shot! Right here!" I pointed at my forehead. "One bullet through here! End the torture for me!"

The officers glanced at each other, unsure of what to do. Finally, the captain walked forward and said: "We don't want to hurt you or kill you, Tobieaz. We are trying to help y-"

"Oh for crying out loud!" I screamed. "I've heard that dozens of time!"

"Then let us help you! Why do you always have to run away every time?"

I pointed at my back. "Because of these wings! I'm a mutant among you! I know what you guys are planning to do! I know it all! I don't care what kind of beautiful lies you may have up in your sleeves, but I'm not going to be a laboratory mouse just for your own goddamn entertainment, you bunch of low-life, filth-covered morons!" I bellowed.

I felt heat rising to my face and head. I felt weak. I watched the people around me.

"Tobieaz! Insulting an officer will make you go to jail! You better watch your mouth!" The captain replied back with restrained temper.

I grinned. "Watch my mouth? Oh sure. Who knows if I will grow a beak in another month or so! You should know better. I don't care about myself anymore. I don't care about anything or anyone!" I spread out my wings.

A woman muttered with bafflement.

"Look, kid. If you don't come with us quietly, we will have to resort in brute strength."

I laughed as I flapped my wings a few times. "Try me." Without further comments, I leaped into the air and blew past the blockade.

A few shots were fired and I felt bullets flying past me. One struck me in the leg. I grunted, trying hard not to scream, as pain was like lightening, scorching into my brain. Men were shouting as they tried to get into their cars to chase after me. I looked back to see they had broken into two smaller groups. One to capture the bandits and the other one to give pursuit on me.

When I tried to ascend back into the cloud, I found out that I couldn't. The air was not strong enough and thick enough for me to do so rapidly. The tall buildings were restricting air currents from moving freely. With terror streaked across my mind, I flew toward the opposite lane frontally. My leg was throbbing with intensified agony. I began to breathe in short, ragged breaths.

Buses, trucks, and vans honked their horns as tires squealed on the pavements. Drivers yelled with amazement while they twisted their steering wheels savagely. The cars all swerved across the lines and smashed into each other. Several rolled over and slid across the street. Passengers shrilled as they bounced around inside their own transportation.

"Are you stupid or something!"

"You could have killed someone you idiot!"

"Is it my fault when a crazy bastard with a pair of crazy wings flying straight at me? Oh shut up, Lina! I know what I saw!"

"Oh my god! That boy's got wings on his back! Kids! Cover yourself! You souls will be stolen by that devil!"

The scene was havoc.

I dodged around other cars as I looked back constantly. Red and blue lights were flashing behind me as they tried their best to catch up to me. Suddenly, I saw a traffic light looming dangerously close to my face. I dipped down sharply and collided onto a windshield of a moving van with my shoulder instead.

The glass was shattering into small, brilliant pieces, as I groaned on the dented roof of the engine compartment. In front of me, a twenty-year old girl had her mouth hanging open.

"Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! I... Oh my god," all she could do was mumbling to herself while she gripped the wheel tightly in her hands. She saw blood running down from the gunshot wound on my lower limb.

I shook my head as I stood up. Behind me, the police cruisers were nearer than before. I jumped into the air and was on my way. A helicopter emerged out of nowhere and started to tailgate me. I growled as I snaked around the edifices, trying to lose the flying machine.

"Tobieaz! Stop this immediately! You are wrecking everything on the streets and endangering everyone! Stop or we will force to shoot you!" A bullhorn sounded.

"You've already shot me, fags!" I screamed back.

Sweat rolled down my face as I decided to fly among the automobiles. It was a suicide maneuver, but I had to get rid of any pursuers in the air. More horns sounded as more pile-ups occurred. A bus banked away from me and crashed through the front door of a bakery shop. Black smoke rose from the spot and blanketed the nearby regions. A man on a small motorcycle had lost his balance and fell to the ground. He rolled away just in time before the garbage truck behind him crushed his motor bike.

The sparks made from the twisted metals ignited the gas tank. A giant fireball exploded and rolled into the ether. The entire place shook with extreme power.

"Damn it, Tobieaz! You're asking for it!" The helicopter had a man leaning out from the side door. He had a gun in his hand.

"Go ahead! You guys want me? You got me!" I screamed as I flapped even harder.

"Someone get an ambulance! And the fire department!" A few people below us cried out with agitation.

I saw a mall up ahead. Gathering up my courage, I got passed the parking lot, dived through the swinging doors and entered the gigantic building. I bumped a few shoppers as I tried to right myself. They sprawled across the ground with pain. Circling around the central area containing a twinkling fountain, I gazed around hastily. Red and orange banners draped transversely between the second and third floors. An elevator was built within a thick column of bricks. The place was brightly lit even in daylight.

Finally, I flew through a hallway on my left and blasted through all the stands and crowds.

"Damn it! What the hell is going on?"

"You moron! Can't you watch where you are flying?"

"Flying!? God! It's a monster!"

"Kill it! Someone kill it!"

"Ahhhhh! My items! Curse you! Curse you I say! My stuff is ruined!"

Objects of various kinds littered across the floor tiles as angry mobs protested with a loud voice. I didn't care. I turned right when the passage had ended with a solid wall. Going up the escalators, I went abruptly to the right again and glided down with an amazing speed. I didn't use my eyes to avoid bodies and pillars. I used my instinct.

It was like radar. With the neurons in my brain, I could sense everything clearly. In fact, I could even run at night with my eyes closed.

I saw a wall of glass with thin, wooden beams to secure them in place. Outside, lucid blue sky was waiting for me. A human wall was behind me, trying to close me off from any escape. I closed my eyes as I broke through the glass with cuts on my hands, arms, back, chest, and talons. The debris scattered onto the concrete floor below on the other side, showering the men holding armed weapons with piercing fragments.

"What the hell are you doing, Tobieaz! You're hurting us!" A captain raced back to his patrol car and covered his head.

Nearly an entire police force was surrounding the mall.

I cast a large shadow among the humans as I temporary blocked out the sun while in the air. Glancing down, my face showed no emotions. After a long look at them, I scoffed and left the scene.

Warm blood slid over my half-naked body and my leg as I gasped with tiredness. Bits of pieces of wood and panel had stuck into my skin. The wound was getting larger. I moaned with pain as I attempted to get to a safe place to rest and recuperate.

Today, I had made history. Today, more than half of the city was in turmoil. At last, I felt some of my fury diminished. However, I knew that everybody would be looking for me now. I would be the most wanted criminal.

A smile stole onto my face. It felt funny to imagine my photo being printed in every single newspaper. I had shown them what would happen if they had messed with me. Hopefully, they had gotten the message.

I sighed as I slowly slithered through the sky. The sun was beginning to disappear over the mountains. It radiated a flood of gold across the land and me within it, flying. My eyes were set on the far-reach of the continent and beyond. Only there could I find a safe place to live. Only there could I have a chance for survival.

My wings were large, as they were the wings of an airplane. They gleamed in deep yellow as they carried me to a better future. I hoped.
