Chapter 11: Free Fall

As I landed on the half-disintegrated balcony in the cold morning air, John had a big grin on his face as if he was a kid that had just fell into a mountain of candy. I jumped around the holes and stopped in front of him.

The wooden floor wobbled unstably. Broken pieces of handrail were scattered across the platform. A few rusted nails stuck through the boards pointy-side up. I took great care to avoid them.

John laughed as he rubbed my head. He wore a thick, light brown overall with a pair of worn-out tennis shoes. He hadn't shaved for quite a few days, as his beard was growing long on his face without any sort of order. His eyes were dull-looking, they had lost the fire that I had saw a long time ago back at my house.

I folded my wings and forced a smile even though I didn't feel like it.

"How are you doing, Tobieaz? Oh god, I'm so glad to see you!" John shouted as he patted my shoulder.

"John, I thought they have killed you," I said as I studied him from head to toe.

"Naw, just a few scratches and bruises. Nothing serious. I'll tell you all about it later. What happened to you lately? The news media is going crazy about you! You were seen on the downtown commercial streets, and you were seen underground in the subway! And to the amazement of everything else, you flew! My god, do you know how wild that is? You actually flew into the air! I mean, have I not seen you gliding in this direction, I wouldn't have believed it!"

I laughed as I wiped the dirt off my bare shoulders and chest. John grabbed my hand. Just as he tried to lead me into the warmth of the abandoned building, he yelped with pain.

Looking down, he saw a drop of blood appearing at the side of his large, soil-covered palm. "What the..." John then gazed at my fingers. His mouth dropped in astonishment as he slowly uncurled my hand. "Tobieaz, let me see your nails."

I was stunned for a minute. I shook my head as I tried to take a step back. Without warning, a sharp cracking sound slammed into our ears. My talons had snapped a wasted plank. I didn't wear any shoes and John could see them clearly.

I didn't know what to say as John looked at me with his wide blue eyes.

"I... uh..." I stammered as I tried to find an explanation for my transformation.

"Tobieaz..." he sucked in a deep breath as he observed my claws and talons. "You've changed since the last time I've seen you... But how?"

I sighed as I shrugged. "Looks like my genes have been altered significantly..."

"What about your shirt and shoes? Aren't you cold?"

"Not really... I've gotten used to the harsh weathers in the wild before I was captured." I shivered as I recalled the terrible time spent in the laboratory cell.

"You were caught?" John frowned as he tried to digest all the uncanny thoughts in his head. "All right. Come with me."

The multi-colored sunbeams rushed down the slope of the mountains as the gray sky was slowly clearing up. Birds began to sing while they took flight, absorbing the mild sunlight with their well-preened feathers. Summer was almost over and fall was coming. Soon, winter would arrive as well. How could I survive such severe season? A season of death and frigidity?

I could hear its voice whispering to me.

The apartment was located around the bottom of the hills with alleys that could never receive any daylight and are covered with filth. A large construction site was near the place. The site was littered with materials of various kinds. Workers were trying to finish their grand mall before the due date and sounds of hammering among the structures were travelling through the still air.

I followed John into the unlit corridors and we turned a few times before we were met with a soft glow of candles in a huge living room, or what was left of it. I squinted my green eyes from the sudden flood of light.

In the middle of the chamber, a set of well-maintained sofa rested firmly on top of a ragged carpet, which was colored in dark blue. A short antique table was placed in front of the seats. Bottles of beer and coke were left on top of it. A small fireplace was fabricated along the wall on my left. Windows, which were barred for protection, were on my right as they let in the rich sunshine that I loved so much.

Dusts floated in the nearly bare room while I gazed around.

My talons clicked on the hard wooden floor as I strode over to the other side and peeked into the smaller bedrooms and washroom.

"This is it, Tobieaz. My new home," John declared as he slumped onto the furniture. "Make yourself comfortable. In fact, why don't you sit beside me and we'll have a talk about the recent events?"

I fluffed my wings as I walked back to him. Sitting down around the edge to prevent my wings from being squashed, I sighed.

"Let's start with you, John. What happened that day when you told me to run away from the car and into the forest?" I began the conversation with a question of my own.

John opened a fresh can of beer as he shifted his weight. "When you were safely out of the sight, I drove my jeep right into the police cruisers. Of course, those bastards fired their guns but they didn't aim at me. They were aiming at the tires. Rolling on steel rims, I lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the trunk of a tree."

I held my breath as he took a short pause to drink.

"In the end, they handcuffed me. Punched me a few times during the arrest. They brought me back to the station for questioning. I didn't tell them much, so don't worry. Finally, they had enough and threw me in jail for a week before my sister, Lindsy, bailed me out."

"You have a sister?" I asked as I focused all my attention on him. At the same time, I tried to smooth out the feathers on my wings with my hands and arms. They were warm...

"Yes, I have a sister. The officers told me to stay out of their town and so on, and here I am. With some money and a second-hand car, I managed to find an edifice that is free, which is this one."

I groaned as I closed my eyes. "Sorry about all this, John. If only you haven't met me, perhaps your life would have been ten times better than it is now."

He laughed as he shook his head. "No, Tobieaz. It isn't your fault in any way. I made the choice and I like the choice. Instead of doing work, work, work all day long, I'm free now. I have enough money in the bank to live a fairly cozy life, thanks to my twenty years of hard work on researching and collecting data on different bird species."

"I'm sure you've added me to those lists of yours."

John looked at me as he smiled. "In fact, I just did. A week ago, on my laptop."

I was surprised. "You what? You did? But-"

"I named you, the first human-bird species ever appeared on the planet, Spirit, in my database."

"John, you are obviously mistaken. I... I don't even know whether if I want to continue to exist in this world or not! I... You know, right now I'm completely lost. I don't know if anyone, other than you, can help me," I rubbed my forehead as I groaned.

John laid a hand on my back. "Look, kid. You will continue to survive. You've come this far, why throw your life away just because some moron won't accept as who you are, but will treat you as a monster?"

I choked back the lump that was forming in my throat. This was not the time to break. I must remain strong.

"Can't anyone else help me, John?" I whispered.

The room was filled with unpleasant pressure, as the air became hot and stuffy. In the distance, construction noises were blaring.

"I'm sorry, Tobieaz. With the world today and our ideal of a normal human... I'm afraid that no one can help you but yourself," John reluctantly answered and confirmed my worst nightmare.

I gaped at him, as I felt numb to what I was hearing. "No... No one can help me?"

"None."

"What about a safe place? Can you send me somewhere that I can live in peace and quiet?"

He sighed as he leaned back into the seat. His fingers were rolling the beer can playfully as he thought about it. At last, he replied: "Tobieaz, if no one can accept you here, then no matter where you go, you won't be accepted anywhere else."

I was struck dumbfounded. I could only gaze at John's aged face while my brain was paralyzed, literally.

He couldn't stand the look on my face. Clearing his throat, John got up and tossed the tin into the garbage can not far from where he was. Readjusting his coat, he gave me a key.

"I have to do some shopping. I'll be back in a while, Tobieaz. Here's the key to the front door. Make sure that you lock up all windows tightly. We'll talk about your encounter when I come back, okay?"

Before I could say anything, John quickly left me alone in the massive apartment.

***************************

It was evening when I got waken up by a scream outside in the foul alleys. I didn't know how long I had been asleep. Day had turned into night. The candles had burnt out and the room was blanketed with complete darkness. I ran to one of the windows and looked out through the fuzzy glass.

With my keen eyesight, I saw three men were harassing a young teenage girl. She was probably my age, around fifteen, sixteen. The muscular brutes were trapping her in the byway, with the concrete wall behind her back.

I glanced around, looking for John for help but he wasn't back yet. What was taking him so long? I turned my attention back to the innocent girl who was going to be raped by those ugly thugs. My mind was racing. What could I do? Should I try to save her? Should I just leave her to her own fate?

When one of the adult males grabbed her shirt and attempted to rip it open, I couldn't hold back my emotions anymore. I edged around the interior wall, trying to find a window that wasn't barred. Using a steel pipe that I had found on the ground beside me, I smashed though the panel and leaped out, spreading my wings wide.

"Let her go! You bunch of low life scumbags!" I screamed as I landed onto of the person who was touching her body all over the place.

My talons ripped his scalp, drawing out blood. He yelled in agony as he fell back onto his butt, holding his head with his hands. The other two squealed in shock as they saw my wings.

"Holy mother f-"

"What the hell is that? God! It's gross!"

The area was poorly lit and I couldn't see their faces. They shouted and pointed as they searched for a weapon to use. I gritted my teeth as I kicked the fallen man before me. He grunted and moaned with pain.

"What... Who are you?" The girl asked in a shaky voice as she stared at my back and of course, my flying appendages.

"Just stay behind me and you'll be fine," I responded. Then I added under my breath: "I hope."

"Bob! I found some pipes! Let's use them and teach the monster brat a lesson!" One person bellowed as he gripped the metal tube in his meaty hands.

I gulped as I extended my wings. "If you guys don't want to get eaten by me, I suggest you leave!" I boasted without any confidence of surviving this.

Suddenly, a large brick smashed into the left side of my skull. I cried out as I crashed onto the soiled wet gravel. Tepid red liquid gushed out from the cut on my head as I slowly crawled on the ground, trying to see who hit me. My eyes were seeing double as I gasped with extreme ache.

I felt like throwing up.

"Oh my god! Are you okay?" Her voice, so soft and sweet, floated into my eardrums even though they were now ringing like crazy. Her voice was like a melody to me. It kept me from falling unconscious.

"He won't be okay anymore, the fucking dog! We're going to teach the mutant a lesson of his life time," the guy who I had assaulted a while ago was staggering to his feet. He was filled with rage. "I don't care if you a boy or whatever! To cross with us, you would have the nerve of a tiger!"

He spat on me as he took a broad, steel bar from his buddies. All three of them chuckled as they tossed their deadly weapons back and forth.

"No, please, don't do this!" She begged them as she huddled close to my half-naked body.

Her scent was like the smell of a rose... I groaned as I shook my head trying to clear the flying stars that I was seeing.

"Don't do this?" Another snickered as he shoved her abruptly away from me.

She stifled a yell as her back was thrown against an erected post.

"Don't do this? Don't do what?" The first man who I had attacked said in a mocking tone. "Don't do this?"

He unexpectedly swung the bar and struck me in the kidneys. I screamed as I winced. My claws were scratching the stony surface that I was on as I coughed. Tears of stinging pain were forced out of my eyes.

"Is that what you mean? Bitch? Is that what you mean?" He teased both her and me as he faked a sad face.

The next blow landed on one of my wings. I shrieked with suffering as I felt one of the bones snapped. The pain was like a bolt of lightening, exploding inside my body and slammed into my brain. I groaned as I gritted my teeth.

"What's the matter? Beast? You feel awfully bad right now? Huh?" The three of them surrounded me.

One stomped his boot onto my spine. I yelled out as I struggled to get away from this madness, this torture.

"No! Stop it!" The girl screamed as tears flowed out of her eyes. "Stop it!"

"Shut up! Bitch!" One of them glared at her. "Shut up unless you want to be with him, and be like him!"

I felt another pipe clobbered one of my shoulders. I screamed out again. For the next ten minutes, they each beat me separately until finally, all of them began to land a hail of blows. One strike after another. Pretty soon, I was half-conscious. Both my wings were broken, along with one of my arms and my legs. My eyes were swollen shut as blood covered me completely. I was busted up pretty badly.

My angel, all she could do was pleading them to stop, to leave me alone. She continued to implore them until the leader slapped her in the face so hard that she blacked out. I basically let them attacked me until they were tired and satisfied. I didn't move. I couldn't move.

It was almost like a century's time until they were gone. Even breathing was a difficult task for me now. I was sure that I had more bones broken by the cement blocks and water pipes.

I felt a wave of nausea surging forth from my stomach. Without any control of my muscles, without any feeling of any parts of my body, I vomited right there in the damp, caliginous back street. I felt my own blood pulsing out from my wounds. I couldn't think clearly, and I couldn't see clearly.

All I could do was sprawling across the pavement and gasped in short breaths. I felt a chilly sensation crawling up from my legs. That was good. At least I could feel that. At least I knew that my spine was not broken. But you know what? I felt tired. Remarkably tired. As I lay on the dirty ground, I was drifting in and out of consciousness.

One part of me said don't go to sleep, Tobieaz Redil. Don't go to sleep just yet. Fight it off! Fight it off! Another part of me said come on, just close your eyes and close your mind and go to sleep. It'll be comfortable. It'll be worth it. Why endure such torment? No one likes you. No one. Your friend hates you now; your parents want you gone... Why still fighting? Let it all go...

When I had decided that it was the end, when I was nearly asleep, I felt a gentle hand touching my face. I grunted as the throe appeared.

"Are you okay?" A female voice whispered into my ear. Was it her? Was it really her? I wanted to see her face. I wanted to see my angel...

"Careful, don't move him too much. My god, what happened?" A man's voice emerged. He placed his hot palm on my head.

"I... I'm sorry. It's all my fault. I... If only I didn't scream so loud and just let those men take me... He... He wouldn't be in this condition... I..." Her voice broke and she began to sob uncontrollably.

I sucked in a breath forcefully as I murmured: "No... Don't... Cry..."

"Shh, don't talk, Tobieaz. You have a concussion and you are in a very bad shape right now. We need to get you inside the building." The man slowly lifted me up with his powerful arms.

I groaned and coughed as I felt myself being tear in half. Just when I thought I couldn't bear the agony any longer, I felt her hand slipped into mine. She took great care from being scratched by my claws. She gave my hand a squeeze.

"Thank you," she said delicately. "Thank you so much..."

I fell into a sea of blackness when we entered the doorway.
