Chapter 23: The Cries of Anger - Part 2

Monstrous dust clouds arise as my clone dashed toward me with vicious power. Instinctively, I projected a protective shield in front of me. Rocks and pieces of burnt metals were either shattered or they were bent at an unnatural angle.

His right palm came into contact with my obtruded aura. An effulgent light extinguished the vision of the darkened sky. A thundering explosion occurred and I was thrown backward into the dirt. My chest felt as if someone had swung a five hundred pound sledgehammer into my body.

As I coughed, trying to breathe, blood spluttered out from my throat. My visor was cracked and alarm was going off in my combat suit. It was heavily damaged. As I lifted an arm, a section of the reinforced armor fell off and landed on the messed up ground. It was smoking.

"Awww, what's the matter, Jake? Can't you withstand the soft touch of a little boy?" Unit Two snickered as he approached me.

"Get drowned," I snarled while getting up forcefully. "You're not that powerful..."

He only stared at me with those brown eyes of his. I raised my right hand and aimed at him. With a shout, I unleashed a stalwart blast at my counterpart. A trail of wind followed the power bomb as it flew toward Unit Two. A gigantic sun appeared on the surface of the craggy land as several rings of yellowish flames circled above. The earth shook violently as the force of the detonation split the ground into two. Magma erupted from the fissure and turned into lava as it roared high into the ash-covered heaven.

I panted as I shook the sweat beads off my eyes. My strength was drained nearly to the last drop. Slumping onto the ground, I coughed. More blood came out.

Then, he emerged from the thick blanket of smog. Smiling, he waved a finger in front of his face.

"Really, Jake. Do you think that you can kill me by that pathetic attempt?" He laughed.

Glaring, I said: "You little twerp. I'll destroy you..."

"Go ahead. But from the look of your body, you're in no shape of fighting me."

I grunted as I tried to lift myself up. With shaking legs beneath me, my eyes were half-closed with exhaustion. Without warning, a thrust slammed into my stomach and I was hurled upward and backward. Crashing onto the soil, I gasped as I felt several bones in my body snapped.

"Jake! Oh my god! Are you all right?" He faked kindness then guffawed. "Oh... Tormenting you has never been so fun! Looks like Mak did the right thing to create me."

I raised my head as I tried to put the figure into focus. My head was banging like hell, and my bones were either aching or they were sore. My visor was ruined and most of the protective plates were dented. Deep inside, I knew that I could not win.

Before I could draw another intake of air, Jake - Unit Two, pounced. He jumped onto my legs and began to bend them fiercely. I screamed as the muscles were crying out with extreme pressure.

Finally, I couldn't hold it anymore. If I were to die, I would at least take the bastard with me. With a yell, I discharged an unexpected light beam at his face with full power. Shouting with a surprise, he covered his head with his arms. Yet, he couldn't block this final attack from me. It was way beyond his level.

"No! How can this be! I-" His voice was drowned out by the stupendous boom.

The impact of the explosion threw both of us in opposite directions. The wind blew intensely as giant boulders were lifted and bounced away. I slid across the plain for quite a good distance before I stopped. Laying on my back and couldn't move at all, dazed I gazed up into the unsightly sky.

*******************************

Even from the distance, Afren could still hear the explosions near the place where Jake was battling. Her heart skipped a beat when she felt something was wrong. It seemed to her that Jake was... dying. She wanted to drop the crate and run back to her boyfriend, but she couldn't. She still had a mission to complete.

With the Capital Dome looming in sight, she and the other teams knew that it was not long before the unassailable triple shields would come crashing down in a brilliant shower of light crystals.

There was no resistance along the way to the city. All of the troops of the Federation were diverted toward the outcrop of the Dome Cities.

After three more hours of hiking, the shimmering surface of the dome glass was in view. Several hover trucks were parked outside the gates of the municipality. Quickly, they split up in different, smaller groups and each took a vehicle.

Driving, circling around the place and setting the bombs took them six more hours. The city was that big. With a final timer set in, Afren ordered the guys to move out and find some place to take cover.

The nuclear bombs would detonate in fifteen minutes.

Afren hoped that the explosives would be enough, because if they were not, then they would lose the war...

*******************************

I didn't know how long I had been asleep. All I knew was that someone was talking to me while others were dragging me on board a ship. When I was fully awake, I found out that I, covered in mud and blood, was laid in a brightly lit room with monitors surrounding me. I was only wearing a pair of pants, and I was naked above the waistline.

I homed in on a man standing near the doorway. He was looking at me.

"Glad to see that you are awake. For a moment there, we thought you are gone for good," Roxan cleared his throat as he walked toward me. "You've got internal injuries and nearly half of your bones are either cracked or broke. We've treated most of the wounds, but you need some time to heal completely."

"That bad, huh?" I replied as I sat up slowly. The pain was still there, but it wasn't as intense as before. "So what had happened while I was knocked unconscious?"

Roxan sighed as he said: "Well, almost half of my force is wiped out because of you, Jake. You're light show was... impressive, yet at the same time, costly."

"You can't always have everything go your way, Roxan."

"True. That's why I've never given the order to have you shot in the head, considering the massive loss of my men. On a good side, I must say a job well done," he chuckled as he slapped my bare shoulder. "You've wiped out the Federation Army totally!"

I raised an eyebrow. "Oh? I didn't know I was that strong."

"Oh yeah, we've just received Afren's message five minutes ago."

I was alert instantly. "And?"

"She's all right. They've finished planting the bombs. In another roughly ten more minutes, we can see the shields of the Capital Dome come crashing down."

"Does she know... that I'm all right?" I asked.

"Yes and she's relieved by that. If you are feeling comfortable, how about let's talk on the Command Center? We'll be within visual range with the metropolis soon."

I nodded as Roxan left the medical room. Gradually lowering myself from the bed, my talons touched the icy floor tiles. I couldn't find any extra clothing around me, so I marched into the cool catwalk half-naked. I needed to have a bath soon.

When we were far away from ground zero, Afren called in again.

"Roxan, detonation is primed to go off in another thirty seconds, you guys ready over there?" Her voice, sweet as before, came flowing through the speaker.

"All ready to go. Our crafts are lining up waiting for the concluding assault."

"How's Jake?"

"I'm here, Afren. Don't worry about me and take care of yourself okay?" I interrupted hastily. I wanted to let her know that I was well and alive. I didn't want her to be distracted by my injuries.

"Oh Jake! Do you know how much I miss your voice?" She sounded happy over the transmission. "After this thing's over, we'll travel among the stars, won't we? We'll visit our home planet, right?"

I laughed as I answered: "Of course we will. Look, the warheads are going off very soon, so I'll talk to you later okay? Be careful over there!"

The communication was ended with crewmembers all staring at me with sly expressions.

"What? Is it a sin to have some love talk between a man and his girl?" I rebutted their looks with a stern tone.

"Oh no. No, of course not. It's just... entertaining, that's all," Roxan grinned as he winked.

*******************************

When the timer was at zero, five fiery spheres, all colored in shades of red and yellowish-orange constantly mixing with a tint of light green, appeared. The explosions were so devastating that the entire planet was shaking in its orbit. The mold shuddered and vaulted as gases shot out from the abyss. The liquid-like flames submerged the shields as several claps of blowout drummed the very air that our ships were wafting in.

Light and dark blue sparks and bolts flashed out from the center of the colossal luminaries. Their aflame tongues licked across the already atomized land, burning everything in their path into crispy objects that disintegrates into powders when touched.

Our vessel was jolting aggressively throughout the whole ordeal. Warning lights were issued as half of our powers were knocked offline. Emergency backup juices were poured into the generators.

"Holy shi-" Roxan shouted as the light coming from the giant view screen seemed to be invading our interior.

"Afren!" I yelled while the scene before me was strangulated into a white limitless void.

*******************************

It was nearly an hour after the Great Concussion that we charged in. We named this peerless event to remember it by. With nearly a hundred or so battleships, we had created a path of destruction with cannons blazing. Any obstructions that tried to hinder our greatest conquest were instantly vaporized.

Something was tugging at the back of my mind during all that time. Afren hadn't reported back after the detonations.

When we had confidence that all the available units the Federation had were gone, we touched down and began to sweep the sectors on foot. The great President tower rose before us.

I gave Roxan a nod as I limped toward the main entrance. Bursting down the gates, I stepped in. Towering all the trembling humans, I scanned the area for Mak.

Looking down at a terrified lady, I asked: "Where's Mak?"

"I... I don't know. He... He left two hours ago before you guys took down th- the... the defense of the Capital Dome... Plea- Please don't hurt me," her large, tear-flooded eyes gazed into mine with miserably.

"Where is he?"

"He's... I think he's at the small island seven miles away from here..."

Hearing the news, I snarled. Having no prime target in my claws, I slammed my fists onto the counter before me. It popped as the wood split in half, causing the entire structure to cave in.

People around me screamed with horror when they saw me losing my temper. I stalked out of the building in a rapid pace. Reaching the leader of the Rebel Force, I said: "I need to go. Get me a car, now."

Dazed with the sudden request, all the man could do was nodding.

*******************************

I literally flew down the highway that stretched along the coast. Ocean waves roared below the outspread road as birds sang above in the firmament. I stomped the accelerator all the way down and veered past the curves and other incoming vehicles. Horns blared as drivers shouted out a bank of rich profanities.

I knew where Mak had gone. I also knew that Afren was in trouble. How did I know that? I had no idea. It was just a hunch, a feeling that only she and I possessed. Mak was at the island that I had supposedly destroyed when I was a human. That was the place where I was created.

Growling, I pushed the motors to the limit as I drew the distance between the island and me closer and closer...

*******************************

When I had arrived, only a small, blackened entrance could be seen. A crater that I had made nearly two years ago replaced the rest of the vista. Stepping onto the ductile clay, my talons sank slightly from my weight. I headed into the shadow-covered portal as I descended down the rusty stairway.

The air was filthy. It was filled with the smells of chemicals and burnt materials. I glanced left and right as I took great caution into avoiding fallen debris. Some of them were extremely piercing.

I came across a room that was half opened. With a deep breath, I kicked down the decayed door. A monitor was on, but it was flickering from the half-damaged electron tubes. My pair of yellow eyes fixed onto the screen as I pressed the enter key.

Immediately, a file was played. It was the data recorded by the scientists that were working in this complex. In the documentation, there was a shot of a lab, which was filled with several large tanks. In each tank, unidentified creatures were floating in the dense, emerald liquid with wires and sensors attached to them.

As I was watching, I glanced back toward the hallway. Who knows that Mak was trying to do. When I returned my attention to the computer, a man's face appeared. Air stuck in my throat as I gazed at the facade of the person. It was Jason. The professor who had nursed me for sixteen years before I murdered him.

He adjusted the microphone at his shirt collar before clearing his throat.

"Day twenty-four," he began. "The project has been going on successfully. Unit One's vital signs are stable and his neural impulse frequencies are increasing everyday. Soon, he'll be ready."

I gulped, as I knew that he was talking about me. This was a data disc made for the conception of me. The screen went blank and a few seconds later, the image was back.

"It's nearly six months now. We've found some problems with the DNA structures of Unit One. The team is trying their hardest to correct those mistakes. God hopes that we'll succeed."

The video gradually faded out once again. Another delay and it was back on. I began to sweat as I learned how I was created. The film showed how they had used the most advanced machines to pinpoint critical areas of my genetic codes. It also showed me how I had progressed, how I had became powerful and stronger. All of these were achieved by genetic material manipulations. At particular points, the picture jumped wildly due to memory losses. For the most part, the information was intact.

When the CPU buzzed and a column of white smoke rose from the back of the monitor, I left the room. My life was supposedly, created for a military use. The main objective of creating me was to dominate all other opponents in the world today. I was a weapon. A weapon that didn't need refills. What Jason had said before was true. I was nothing but a tool.

"Welcome to the deceased laboratory, Jake Zero Zero One."

A voice sounded over the broadcast system set up somewhere in this ruin. I looked around for Mak.

"Show yourself, you coward!" I yelled into the blackness.

"Why don't you come to me? Just keep on following this tunnel you're in and you'll find me along with your beautiful girl."

Gritting my teeth with rage, I began to run. I savagely trashed through all the wreckage as I was thinking about Afren's safety. Soon, the passage ended. A brown door sat before me. Placing my palm on the cold steel wall, I unleashed a flood of energy, causing the plate to twist with metallic sounds. It fell onto the floor and inside was a room that was lit by six lighting tubes.

Mak was standing in the middle of the tube with a phaser pointed at the temple of Afren's.

"Welcome to my lair, Jake," the President of the New World Colony said as he tightened his grip on the gun.

Though Afren was way taller and stronger than the human, she didn't dare to move. Not with a weapon pointed directly at her head. She gazed at me, face contorted with pain and sadness.

My heart ached to see her like this. Incensed, I said: "Let her go, Mak. This is between you and me."

He laughed out loud as he shook his head. He primed the phaser into full charge. "This is too good. This is wild. Do you think, that I would let your girl go? This is a wonderful way to get revenge! I want to see you fill with sorrow when I killed this female alien!"

"What's the revenge for? You got me right now, let her go," I grounded my fangs as I took a step forward.

"Uh! Nuh! Don't come any closer. What's the revenge for? For destroying my life when you refused to comply with us! You just have to go a rebel against us, and you just have to destroy this whole facility! And for what? Freedom? You don't have any! You are not made to have any!"

"I'm still a living being. I should have the right to have that. I should have the right to be treated equally," I replied as I looked at Afren.

"No you don't!" Mak screamed. He shoved the gun harshly at my girlfriend's head. She yelled with discomfort. "You are supposed to work for me! ME! You are not supposed to have a mind of your own!"

"You mean like Unit Two?"

He smiled. "You've met?"

"Met and annihilated," I answered swiftly. "He was nothing compared to me. Original is always the best."

"You'll pay for that..." Mak grumbled. His thumb caressed the firing button.

"Mak, just let her go. I'll trade my life with hers. Let her go."

"No! Jake, don't do that!" Afren objected immediately. "I can't let you die! I can't live on without you!"

"Oh for crying out loud! Shut up, bitch!" He ordered. Turning around and faced me, he said: "Now you've stripped me from the rank, the very rank that I wanted the most. I am now no longer a President. Do you know what that means?"

Sighing, I said: "It means that you are now a total jackass which is going to be killed by the sharp claws of mine?"

"Wrong answer! It means that I've got nothing to lose anymore! I don't give a damn about this place, I don't give a damn about my life, and I certainly don't give a damn about you!"

Talking, he pointed the weapon at me. I tried to duck when the bright orange laser extended suddenly from the opening of the barrel, but it still got my right shoulder. Yelling with twinge, I fell onto the ground. Blood began to pulse out from the wound, covering the back of my left hand with warm, red liquid. With my wide-open eyes, I saw Mak taking another aim at me.

Afren, seeing the jeopardy that I was in, tossed herself at the human. I watched with horror when a wide spread beam stabbed into her stomach and exited at her back.

"Afren!" I screamed as I tried to move. "Afren! No!"

"See what happens when you guys go against me?" Mak bellowed as he chortled like a maniac. He fired again and again at Afren's lifeless body.

"Mak! You bastard! You'll pay for that! Stop shooting at her!" I cried out with frenzy as I crawled toward my lover.

"Go ahead! Who's gonna stop me!" The shooting continues. The laughter rang in my ears.

My head was paralyzed at what I was seeing. My mind was filled with hundreds of different emotions. I felt tears rolling down my face. I felt my heart nearly stopped with agony. I felt as if my life had just being torn into two.

Finally, he stopped. Wheeling around with a look of satisfaction on his face, he grinned with bloodshot eyes. Sweat was covering his slightly wrinkled face as his hands trembled with excitement.

"God, I love the look on your face, Jake. You don't know how good it feels to me."

I gawked at Afren's blood soaked body. Her beautiful figure. Her wonderful face. I knew that I could never again hear her melody-like voice. I knew that I could never again see her smile. I...

"Mak... You're going to pay for this. You will pay for this..." I muttered softly as I slowly shifted my gaze onto my most hated enemy.

"Yeah? And what are you going to do? I have the gun and you don't. Plus, if you use your psychic powers, I can still finish you off before you can store enough energy to get a shot at me!"

I was now completely exasperated. My life was officially gone. There was no point of continuing to live on. In fact, due to my loss, due to my grief, I had decided that the best way to end this whole tribulation was to self-terminate. To me, that would be the most marvelous way to end my woe. To others, they would die along with me. I didn't care anymore. I didn't care if I had to kill thousands, millions, and billions of people. It did not matter to me.

"Time to say goodnight, Unit One," Mak whispered as he armed the device once again.

"Yes..." I mumbled. "Yes. It's time to say goodnight."

Everything disappeared with a spectacular glitter. I couldn't hear anything anymore. I could, however, hear the shocking cries of Mak. Then, everything went blank.
