Chapter 2: Dangerous Species Revealed

Alarms sounded as I ran out of the doorway. The DNA Filter had picked up an unauthorized exit at the main gate. Different colored lights flashed around me. The sound of danger made me felt excited. I glanced back. I saw two or three patrol guards running toward the access point. It was only a matter of minutes before they could see me, and take me back to where they had been keeping me all these years.

I sneered. Not this time.

In front of me, I saw a lucid glass wall dropping down onto the glossy, polished floor with a bang. It was trying to block whoever that was escaping. I stopped instantaneously as I pressed my hands on the cold surface of the obstacle. I looked through it and behind it; I saw two to three hover planes on the landing pads. Technicians were maintaining the transportations. All of them wore diverse colored clothes. It could be because each of them served a different purpose with different tasks. Around the landing pads were solid concrete walls that were at least twenty inches thick and a hundred meters tall. Only one apparent opening was at the top of the giant chamber. But two armed men were guarding the opening. A gigantic steel door was covering the exit. I would have to activate the control button for the gate somehow. I didn't know where the control panel was.

I guessed that I was never in the Dome City after all. It was getting more obvious now. I was under a complex ever since I was born. Why was I in this place? I had no idea. Why was I being tested over and over again with many rules and restrictions? I did not know. All I knew was that they had lied to me. They said that I was in the most secured area inside the Dome City. Dome city... I wondered what it was like to actually live inside the city...

I slammed my fists at the transparent wall that stood solidly in front of me. I screamed out loud in anger. Why couldn't I be free? What am I? Was I some kind of a freak, a mutant? Who am I? My name… it couldn't just be Jake zero zero one. No. It couldn't be...

"Freeze!" one of the guards got to me first. He held a very primitive handgun at me. It was another safety precaution evidently. Handguns that could shoot out lead bullets dealt less damages than the Hyper Guns that could shoot out a straight line of burning laser.

I turned around slowly. My chest heaved up and down with tiredness. My shoes clanked against the floor. The sound echoed around the hallway. The usual white light was mixed with streams of yellow and red. A code ten alert.

"Jake zero zero one, get back to your room, now!" other guards joined with the first one.

I stood there, not reacting at all.

The humans in front of me gripped their weapons tightly. They gulped hard as they fixed their fear filled eyes on my face. I smirked.

Just look at them tremble, I thought with glee, they are afraid of me.

But why?

"This is the last time that I am going to tell you, Jake zero zero one. Return to your room this instant!" the first guard hollered.

One of them got impatient at my display. He stepped forward and grabbed my right wrist. In his left hand, he held a pair of magnetic handcuffs. My smile vanished. I snarled as I placed my left palm on his face. Unpredictably, my ears began to buzz. My brain was unclear with no definite reasons. I wanted him dead. I wanted everyone that was in my path, dead. Suddenly, without even myself knowing it, he flew back and slammed against the far wall. Blood trickled down from the back of his head. His skull was cracked. His eyes were wide. His mouth was open, screaming in silent agony. I glanced at my hand in awe. The guards screamed with surprise as they moved further away from me.

What just happened? I thought.

"Stun him! Now!"

I looked up. I saw three Electric Shockers being pulled up from their leather covering. I held up my left palm, this time with hostile intention. Just as I tried to do the same effect again, I felt several sharp pains on my chest and on my legs. Without warning, my muscles were paralyzed. I could not move at all. One of them ran toward me and clubbed me hard on the back of my head. The last thing that I remembered was having four guards rushing toward me with different kinds of ropes and cuffs.

Medical doctors and Biolab doctors all gathered around the meeting room. These were the men that were involved with the new project. An oval shaped steel table was in the center of the room. Chairs with air cushions were aligned neatly around the desk with people sitting on them. The room was circular shaped, with tin color window panels entrenched into the walls. The room was dark, with a small lamp in the hub of the place. It was apparently the only light source. People's faces were concealed within the darkness.

The Head of the Biolab doctor took a peek at the information displayed in front of him. He flipped a few pages. He sighed as he looked up.

"It seemed that we have finally failed in our efforts trying to isolate Jake zero zero one by wiping out his memory before he matured. The question right now is how did Jake get the idea of turning against us in the first place?"

One of the Medical professors cleared his throat. "I think it could be from the result of earlier incident with the Neural Sensor Probe. While the Biolab Team Alpha was doing a regular checkup, the system went bonkers on them. The resulting effect of the malfunctioning of the Probe maybe perhaps recalled the memories hidden within Unit One's brain."

"Jason, I think we should end it now," another Medical doctor proposed.

"What do you mean? We are not going to end this experiment just because Jake has some false ideas."

"Look. We know that you have been with Jake ever since he was born. But right now, he has developed to a point where his true strength kicks in-"

"And we all have seen what happened to that poor officer that was on duty. He was being physically flung back twenty meters through the hallway," another doctor interrupted.

The Head of Biolab Team shook his head in dismay. All the eyes were on him right now. He grabbed the stainless steel cup on the table and held it in his hands. He closed his eyes. The warm liquid inside the cup warmed his digits. The aroma of the newly engineered coffee beans floated into his nostrils. The fans in the air ducts whirred simultaneously along with the digital clock's constant beeping sounds.

"Jason, we have to finish him, now. We can't wait any longer. What if Unit One becomes even more powerful than before? I say we terminate this subject while we still can."

Finally, his eyes flew open. Leaning close to the table, the orange light above made his eyes seemed as if they were glowing. "His name is not Unit One anymore. His name is Jake. No 'zero zero one' part. Just Jake, like a normal human being."

Outraged, the Chief of the Medical Team stood up. His face was red with anger. "Jason! How could you be so blind? He is a genetically engineered boy! He is NOT a human being! He is nothing but a subject in a laboratory!"

"Oh? So that means everything that we have created, have no sentient mind? Is that right, Mak?" Jason countered.

"That's right," the fat man said in a matter-of-factly tone.

Jason slammed his fist onto the table. The cups jumped at the impact. People flinched at the sudden noise.

Gritting his teeth, the doctor had a menacing look on his face. "You disgust me."

Just as Mak was going to say something, another doctor stood up.

"This is not the time to discuss about who is right and who is wrong," she said calmly. "What we should do is to think of ways to deal with... Jake."

"I say we disintegrate 'IT' with Photon Cannons," Mak grumbled. He pulled his chair out as he sat down heavily.

Shooting a look of distaste, Jason looked at the female doctor in front of him. "I think we should keep him in his room for a little longer, just to see what other changes that he will be going through in the next few days. Who knows? Maybe he will be calm once again."

"I object!"

"You object to everything I say, Mak!" Jason bellowed.

The room was filled with silence.

"Enough."

A voice hissed with irritation. None of the doctors had noticed the dark shadow sitting in one of the corners before. No one knew, except Jason.

"Who are you?" Mak demanded.

The figure stood up from his couch. "Who am I? I am the one who is funding this facility right now. I am the 'Big Daddy' of this organization."

Gasping, they all started to mumble with each other. "Lord Flodel?"

"I invited him here," Jason said.

Mak glared at his antagonist.

"You guys are acting like a group of little children. If you can solve the DNA and RNA puzzles of living organisms, how come you guys couldn't come to a conclusion regarding to our newest invention?" the man stood forward under the dim light.

"Because some of us are ignorant," Mak muttered.

Conversation began to arouse due to the comment made by the Chief of Medical Team. Lord Flodel held up his hand immediately, lest he let the words flew back and forth freely across the meeting table, and create a bigger problem.

"We need to come to a consensus. We cannot procrastinate this problem anymore," he spoke softly.

The female doctor who had spoke before stood up again. "Dr. Jason has informed me that he would like to have some more time to see the progress of Unit One. What do you think?"

Looking around the room once, Lord Flodel went into a deep thought. He placed his hands at his hips as he stood there, facing his audience. His breathing was slow with confidence. At the age of thirty-nine, he was well built and was over six-foot-two. He had a perfect business record along with an admirable amount of chattels.

"Sir...?"

Clapping his hands, Lord Flodel smiled. "I think I will go along with Jason's plan. After all, we are not going to throw away twenty years of hard work just because Unit- no, Jake, is behaving radically right now." Looking at Dr. Mak's face, Lord Flodel's tone of voice went deeper. "And that's my final decision. End discussion."

People began to talk once again as the Head of the Facility walked out of the room. The automatic sliding door opened and closed with no sound. Mak however, was extremely angry. He packed up his things and walked out of the meeting room without glancing back. Jason stared at the retreating figure with profound thoughts.
